Inspired by Sydney Harbour’s sandstone ridges, the residence is designed to feel as though it was sculpted by natural forces, offering fluid, light-filled spaces that embrace both privacy and openness.

Cove (Sydney, Australia) is a six-bedroom luxury home that stands as a harmonious interplay between architecture and the natural world. Its form is inspired by the sandstone ridges that define Sydney Harbour’s waterline, and the home appears to be carved into a series of fluid, sheltering spaces as though sculpted by its environment.

The spatial arrangement reflects the rhythms of both family life and social connection. The top level is reserved for private retreat, with bedrooms and a master suite opening to a full-width balcony. The ground level, in contrast, hosts the main living spaces—kitchen, dining, and lounge—designed to flow onto the outdoor terrace. Below, the lower ground offers a second living area, fitness zone, sauna and steam room, wine cellar. The infinity edge pool and sundeck continue down the site, on the way to a private boathouse perched on the water’s edge.

The residence orients itself to embrace the nuances of its location. The balconies, deliberately angled to reflect the shoreline, guide the outdoor living areas toward more private, intimate views of the harbour. This subtle yet powerful gesture anchors the home in its landscape, ensuring that its connection to the site remains both visual and spatial.

Here, architecture becomes a lens through which the landscape is both framed and celebrated. Its thoughtful orientation, refined materiality, and integration with the site offer a compelling narrative of balance—between permanence and fluidity, exposure and retreat. This is a home that redefines waterfront living, offering a sanctuary in both form and experience. Koichi Takada
